Nepal

Most popular tour for 2011

Many thanks to Michael Hemmingsen for sending us footage from the March 11 Nepal trip. Nepal has been a very popular destination this year and we have a lot of interest for the 2012 dates.

Cathy Sheehan

May 1955 - September 2011

It was with great sadness that we heard the news of Cathy Sheenan’s death on 2nd September whilst cycling in Kuala Lumpa.

I met Cathy in 2005 when she joined a tour I organised to Laos. A few years later she travelled to Pakistan, China and Kyrgyzstan with myself and 6 of the group she had made friends with in Laos. By the end of the tours Cathy had made a great bond, not just with myself and the group, but also with the local guides, drivers and support staff she came into contact with. She showed such a great interest in the countries, their people and culture.

She was a delight to travel with, always very positive even when things got a bit tough. Cathy lived her life with a passion and showed a great compassion for the unfortunate, she was everything I wanted in a tourist. From the first time I met Cathy I was aware of her family back home; she spoke about her children Jaisi and Anthony with great love and pride.

Only 2 weeks ago Cathy sent me a long letter and a map of China, she sounded so positive and full of enthusiasm for her adventure. It is a tragedy for it to have ended this way. I will truly miss this inspiring lady.

Charity Work:

Braille without Borders

The Red Spokes September/October Lhasa to Kathmandu cyclists are currently enjoying great weather. Both groups have visited ‘Braille without Borders’, the charity we support in Lhasa, and passed on a very generous donation of £590 organised by Nigel Gerke from Swansea, Wales,  who cycled the route  in September 2010.

Nigel said ‘I know that with the right support the visually impaired can do all kinds of things in life. I’m so impressed with the work Braille without Borders does for those children in such a hard environment.

Charity Work:
LVCF School Appeal

We will be launching the Redspokes /LVCF School appeal very soon. All funds raised will be used to build a school house for children in Chablon village in rural Laos, where Red Spokes have committed to running community projects over a number of years.

We are often asked by those who visit Laos on our trips about appropriate gifts to take for the Laotion children.  It is possible to source resources such as stationery, pens, books locally so we would urge you to consider making a donation towards the community projects, either when you visit or via our Just Giving link.
