This was the most exciting cycling adventure I've done to date. There was a lot of variety in the cycling, which kept it interesting. We started off cycling through the scorched, low-lying countryside to the south of Diyarbakir, then towards the end of the trip we climbed soaring mountain passes near Van Lake. Cooler, but more challenging!
The scenery was breathtaking but the best part of the trip for me was meeting the Kurdish people and hearing their stories. Even though at times it was heartbreaking to hear what they had to say, I feel like it was well worth it, and I have come away from this trip with a great respect for the Kurdish people, the culture and their views.
In spite of their troubled history, they are some of the kindest and most welcoming people you could hope to meet '“ we were treated to an impromptu f lunch by locals who had never seen tourists there before and were excited to talk to us. We were even lucky enough to attend three weddings in our time there '“ the music and learning their dance moves was great fun!
This trip is the real thing - I would highly recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure wanting to try something a bit different.

Fabulous!
I've travelled all over the world and been on many redspokes tours but this trip will be remember for a long time!
It's an absolute classic tour if you like cycling on scenic roads no tourist had travelled on. Meeting generous, hospitable locals and don't mind a couple of basic nights accommodation in the more rural parts. If the place stays politically stable I expect in time it will become a must for adventure travellers!

This was the best of the redspokes tours I have been on. Even weeks afterwards the trip the amazing feeling of cycling through this stunning mountain scenery and across wide open planes is undiminished.
The small towns and villages we passed through provided an real insight into day-to-day life as well as the complex history of the area. Above all, the people we met made this tour so special. In the context of the past and current political situation these meeting were similarly humbling and inspiring and the hospitality we experienced was truly wonderful. Thank you Dermot, for inviting me on this trip and give my thanks to Cilem and the drivers for looking after us so well.

The timing of this trip added to a desire to gain a little understanding of the complexities of the region.
The guide was simply outstanding. She is the embodiment of the Turkish Kurds mindset. She also demonstrates the tolerance of the Kurds and their desire to move forward to a progressive inclusive society within Turkey.
We saw this on many occasions in small villages where locals who had never seen tourists before were keen to welcome us and provide hospitality to us. They provided safety to refugees who told us their heartbreaking personal stories. And they lived in harmony with neighbours of different religions all working together to ensure the peace process is successful.
The landscape was dramatic particularly in the second week. The small communities we visited were curious and welcoming (we were guests at three different weddings).
Thanks Dermot for giving me a small insight into a different culture.

There are many variables which contribute to an enjoyable cycle tour - the scenery, the people, the local history, the hospitality, the accommodation, the weather, the food, the guides, the roads - to name but a few.
This tour improved day on day until it peaked during the second week; a week where all the variables came together and gave me some of my most memorable and enjoyable days on a bicycle.
The Kurdish people are truly generous hosts and I will always cherish my memories of this part of the world.

This tour excelled all my expectations, which I should acknowledge were high due to the fabulous redspokes tours I have been on before.
Dermot, Cilem and the drivers were brilliant. Special thanks to Cilem who knew the area inside out, was loads of fun and great company.
The area was magnificent and the people wonderful. The Kurds must surely be the most welcoming and friendliest people. It was humbling to share chi with them and hear about their experiences. There are too many experiences that stand out so it is hard to pick one out from:
Good cycling, lovely people, wonderful landscape and an area few tourists have visited and what a welcome we had!
Thank you

A unique opportunity to explore and experience a part of the world with many layers of ancient history and a strong regional culture which still survives despite the challenges of recent decades.
Lots of 'big' scenery with a chance to stop and take a glass of tea in small villages along the way with the most open, warm and welcoming of people.
