Bicycles are part of everyday life for many people in Cambodia, making a cycling holiday one of the most rewarding ways to experience the country’s culture, landscapes and rural way of life.
The redspokes Cambodia cycling holiday offers a rich and varied journey through this fascinating country. The tour begins in the capital, Phnom Penh, where you will have your first encounter with Khmer culture, French colonial influences and the city’s complex modern history. There is time to explore some of Phnom Penh’s historic landmarks, including the Silver Pagoda with its 5,000 silver floor tiles, the Royal Palace complex, the Throne Hall and the ancient hilltop temple of Wat Phnom. The city’s Russian Market and art-deco Central Market are lively places to browse for local crafts, food and souvenirs, and to practise your bartering skills.
Cambodia’s more recent history is also an important part of the journey. In Phnom Penh there is time to visit Tuol Sleng, also known as S21, and the Killing Fields, both powerful and moving reminders of the Khmer Rouge period.
Heading south, the tour continues towards the coast and the relaxed seaside town of Kep. We cycle through traditional countryside of salt fields, small villages and Kampot pepper plantations before taking a break from the bikes for a boat trip to Koh Tonsay, or Rabbit Island. Set in the Gulf of Thailand, this peaceful tropical island is known for its white-sand beaches and laid-back atmosphere.
Back on the bikes, the route turns north, beginning with a beautiful ride along the banks of the Mekong River. As the journey continues, we travel through rural Cambodia towards Siem Reap, gateway to the extraordinary Angkor Archaeological Park. Prepare to be overawed by the scale and religious splendour of Angkor Wat, especially at sunrise, and by the atmospheric temples and countryside surrounding Siem Reap.
Cambodia has often been described as a country of great contrasts. This redspokes cycling holiday combines history, culture, temples, coast, countryside and everyday Khmer life, offering a broad and memorable insight into one of Southeast Asia’s most compelling destinations.
The itinerary includes approximately 653 km of cycling. Unusually for a redspokes tour, the terrain is generally not hilly, but the riding is still varied and rewarding. Many of Cambodia’s roads are now well surfaced, while in more remote areas we encounter rougher conditions, dirt tracks and quieter rural routes.
