Mongolia

Mongolia is an extraordinary cycling destination, a vast country of open steppe, rolling grasslands, forested mountains and seemingly endless horizons. With one of the lowest population densities in the world and very little traffic outside the main towns, travelling by bike offers a remarkable sense of space and freedom.

Nomadic traditions remain an important part of life across rural Mongolia, where herding families live alongside their livestock and horses graze across the open steppe. Staying in traditional Ger camps and camping beneath immense skies brings you closer to both the landscapes and the people who live among them.

Our Mongolia Bulgan cycling tour begins in Ulaanbaatar before heading north by train to Erdenet. From here, the route crosses grasslands, river valleys and mountain landscapes towards the historic Orkhon Valley and Karakorum, once the capital of the Mongol Empire.

More Information about Mongolia

Mongolia is a country defined by its immense scale, where mountains, forests and great grasslands stretch towards seemingly endless horizons. Known as the Land of the Blue Sky, its huge open landscapes and sparse population give the country a character unlike almost anywhere else in Asia.

Beyond the capital, much of life remains closely connected to the land. Herding families move seasonally with horses, sheep, goats and cattle, living in traditional Gers that have been used by nomadic communities for generations. Buddhism, the legacy of the Mongol Empire and more recent Soviet influences have all contributed to the distinctive culture of modern Mongolia.

Cycling provides a wonderful way to experience this vast landscape. Remote tracks lead across open steppe, through river valleys and into the mountains, with little traffic and few settlements along the way. Camping and Ger stays add to the sense of adventure, creating a journey where the landscapes, nomadic culture and sheer space of Mongolia are as important as the cycling itself.
