Key Places – India – Kerala
Madurai
Madurai is one of India’s oldest and most sacred cities, with a history stretching back more than 2,500 years. At its heart stands the magnificent Meenakshi Temple, an architectural masterpiece adorned with thousands of colourful sculptures depicting Hindu gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures.
A visit here offers a fascinating introduction to South Indian culture, religion, and daily life. The bustling streets surrounding the temple are filled with flower sellers, market traders, and pilgrims, creating an unforgettable sensory experience before the cycling heads into the hills.

Kodaikanal
Known as the “Princess of Hill Stations,” Kodaikanal sits high in the Palani Hills at over 2,000 metres above sea level. Surrounded by forests, waterfalls, and panoramic viewpoints, it provides a welcome escape from the heat of the plains below.
The challenging climb to reach Kodaikanal is rewarded with spectacular views, cool mountain air, and a relaxed atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy lakeside walks, local markets, homemade chocolates, and stunning scenery across the surrounding Western Ghats.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
Situated between the rainforests of Kerala and the dry plains of Tamil Nadu, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most biodiverse areas on the tour. The route passes through beautiful forested landscapes where wildlife sightings are possible, including spotted deer, langurs, and a wide variety of bird species.
The sanctuary forms part of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO-listed biodiversity hotspot. The combination of mountain scenery, wildlife, and quiet roads makes this one of the most memorable cycling days of the journey.

Kerala Backwaters
The Kerala Backwaters provide one of the most iconic experiences in southern India. This vast network of canals, lagoons, rivers, and lakes is best explored aboard a traditional houseboat, known locally as a kettuvallam.
Gliding through palm-lined waterways offers a unique perspective on rural Kerala life. Villages, fishing boats, rice paddies, and coconut groves line the banks, creating a peaceful and unforgettable contrast to the mountain cycling earlier in the tour.

Kochi
Kochi (Cochin) provides a fascinating finale to the journey. Located on the Malabar Coast, the city reflects centuries of trade and cultural exchange, blending Indian, Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Chinese influences.
Historic sites such as the Dutch Palace, the Paradesi Synagogue, spice warehouses, and the famous Chinese fishing nets offer a glimpse into Kochi’s rich maritime past. Combined with its vibrant waterfront and atmospheric old town, Kochi is the perfect place to conclude a cycling adventure through southern India.
