Key Places – Pakistan – The Old Silk Route
Gilgit
Gilgit is the historic gateway to the Karakoram and an important crossroads between Pakistan, China and Central Asia. Set where mountain valleys meet, the town is surrounded by rugged peaks and has long been a stopping point for traders, travellers and mountain expeditions.
For riders, Gilgit marks the real beginning of the high-mountain adventure. The surrounding roads offer an unforgettable introduction to northern Pakistan, with steep-sided valleys, powerful rivers, apricot orchards and glimpses of the great peaks that define the region.

Bagrote Valley & Chira
Bagrote Valley is one of the hidden gems of the Karakoram, surrounded by glaciers, high peaks, terraced fields, and traditional mountain villages. Cycling through the valley offers spectacular views of the Hinarche Glacier and Diran Peak, while providing a genuine insight into life in one of Pakistan’s most remote regions.
At the head of the valley lies the village of Chira, where cyclists visit the local school and women’s sewing centre. Redspokes now directly finances the sewing centre through its LVCF charity, helping provide vocational training and income opportunities for local women. Meeting the community and learning about life in the valley is often one of the most rewarding experiences of the tour.

Karimabad
Karimabad is the cultural heart of the Hunza Valley and one of the most beautiful mountain towns in Asia. Perched high above the valley floor, it enjoys magnificent views of some of the Karakoram’s most iconic peaks, including Rakaposhi, Ultar Sar, and Ladyfinger Peak.
The town is famous for its rich history, welcoming people, and the historic Baltit Fort, which has watched over the valley for more than 700 years. A rest day here allows time to explore the fort, wander through local markets, and soak up the remarkable mountain scenery.

Passu
Passu is one of the most photographed locations in Pakistan, thanks to the spectacular Passu Cones that rise dramatically above the village. Situated in Upper Hunza, the area is surrounded by glaciers, turquoise rivers, and some of the most dramatic landscapes anywhere in the Karakoram.
Cyclists ride past Attabad Lake and the famous Hussaini Suspension Bridge before reaching Passu. The combination of rugged mountain scenery, traditional Wakhi culture, and stunning natural beauty makes this one of the visual highlights of the entire expedition.

Shimshal Valley
Known as the “Valley of Mountaineers,” Shimshal is one of the most remote inhabited valleys in Pakistan. Reached by an extraordinary road carved into sheer cliffs above the Shimshal River, it offers a rare glimpse into life in one of the world’s great mountain wildernesses.
The Wakhi people of Shimshal maintain a traditional lifestyle centred around yak herding and high mountain pastures. Surrounded by glaciers, rugged peaks, and vast alpine landscapes, the valley delivers an unforgettable sense of isolation and adventure that few destinations can match.
