Key Places – Thailand and Laos
Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai is the starting point for this cross-border cycling journey, set among the mountains, rice fields and river valleys of Thailand’s far north. Smaller and quieter than Chiang Mai, the city offers a relaxed introduction to Lanna culture, with colourful temples, lively markets and a strong sense of place.
From Chiang Rai, the route heads into rural northern Thailand, riding through quiet villages, farmland and rolling hills towards Chiang Kham and Phu Lang Ka. This opening section gives a wonderful first taste of the landscapes that define the journey: mountain roads, forested ridges, small communities and wide views across the Thai-Lao borderlands.

Phu Lang Ka
Phu Lang Ka is one of the most scenic highland areas in northern Thailand, known for its misty mountain views, peaceful valleys and remote rural atmosphere. The ride here brings a satisfying sense of elevation, with climbing roads, forested slopes and beautiful panoramas across the surrounding hills.
This is a quieter and more local side of Thailand, far from the busy tourist routes. Early mornings can be especially atmospheric, with clouds gathering in the valleys below and the hills rising above the mist. It is a memorable mountain highlight before the route continues towards the Laos border.

Pakbeng & the Mekong River
Crossing into Laos brings an immediate change of pace, as the journey follows the great Mekong River towards Pakbeng. This small riverside town has long been a stopping point for travellers moving between Thailand and Luang Prabang, and its setting above the river makes it a memorable first night in Laos.
The Mekong is one of the defining features of this section of the tour. Boats, forested hills, riverside villages and steep green banks create a strong sense of travelling through the heart of mainland Southeast Asia. The ride towards Pakbeng and onward to Luang Prabang offers a beautiful introduction to Laos’ slower rhythm and rural charm.

Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang is one of Southeast Asia’s most enchanting towns and a major highlight of the tour. Set between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, this UNESCO-listed former royal capital is known for its golden temples, French colonial architecture, quiet lanes, riverside cafés and surrounding forested hills.
A rest day here gives time to explore at a gentle pace. Visit ancient monasteries, climb Mount Phousi for views over the town, wander the night market or enjoy the calm atmosphere that makes Luang Prabang so special. After days on the bike, it is a beautiful place to pause and absorb the culture, history and warmth of Laos.

Vang Vieng
Surrounded by towering limestone karsts and the winding Nam Song River, Vang Vieng is one of Laos’ most spectacular natural settings. The ride into town passes through lush valleys, rice paddies, and dramatic mountain scenery that has made this one of the country’s most photographed landscapes.
Once a backpacker hotspot, Vang Vieng has evolved into a centre for outdoor adventure and relaxation. With riverside cafés, caves, hiking trails, and stunning sunset views, it provides the perfect rest-day destination in the heart of the tour.

Muang Feuang
Muang Feuang offers a glimpse into authentic rural Laos. Set amongst mountains, rivers, and fertile farmland, this peaceful town is far removed from the country’s better-known tourist destinations and showcases a slower, more traditional way of life.
The route here follows quiet roads through rice paddies, bamboo groves, and small villages where local people continue to live much as they have for generations. It is one of the most culturally immersive sections of the tour.

Vientiane
Laos’ laid-back capital provides a fitting finale to the journey. Situated on the banks of the Mekong River, Vientiane combines elegant French colonial architecture, golden temples, bustling markets, and relaxed riverside cafés.
Highlights include the iconic Pha That Luang, colourful temples, and the lively Mekong waterfront. After days spent cycling through remote countryside and mountain valleys, Vientiane offers a fascinating contrast and a memorable conclusion to the adventure.
