Chile & Argentina
redspokes Patagonian Lake District cycling holiday is a journey through one of the most magnificent landscapes in the world. This spectacular area, featuring both strong European influences and indigenous cultures, spans 300 km from north to south and overlaps the dramatic Andean Mountain range between Chile and Argentina.
The ever-changing scenery has been shaped by millions of years of volcanic activity. Smouldering peaks dominate the skyline alongside snow-capped mountains and towering granite summits along our cycling route. The lower slopes of the Andes are blanketed with ancient rainforest and lush vegetation. Deep valleys are filled with icy fjords, emerald lakes and tumbling waterfalls in a landscape of outstanding natural beauty. What better vantage point could there be than the saddle of a bicycle?
From Puerto Varas we cycle along the shores of the Llanquihue Lake with views of Osorno, Puntiagudo, Tronador and Calbuco Volcanoes. Crossing the border into Argentina, our holiday continues as we mountain bike on to Bariloche, the adventure capital of the Patagonian Lake District, for a rest day with the option of tackling the famous circular cycle route. From here we embark on the stunning Seven Lakes Route (one of the most scenic in Argentina) to San Martin de los Andes with its breath-taking lakeside setting. Crossing back into Chile riding along the Huahum path, we cycle through the Villarrica national park to Pucón, the main adventure tourism hub of the Chilean Lake District, with Volcán Villarrica as a simmering backdrop. Our holiday ends at Parque Conguillio. Chile’s first geo park is home to underground lakes, deep water lagoons and South America’s most active volcano: Llaima. Your Argentina cycling adventure starts in Salta ‘la Linda’, a picturesque colonial city renowned for its stunning architecture and dramatic scenery. From Salta, we ride through the Calchaquíes Valleys, cycling along the striking Quebrada de las Conchas, a sandstone gorge carved during the Cretaceous Period.
Discover Cafayate’s Vineyards
Arriving in Cafayate, Argentina’s second-most famous wine region after Mendoza, you'll find an idyllic town surrounded by vineyards. With its growing reputation for outstanding wine, this is a perfect place to pause and enjoy the scenery.
Ruta 40 and Ancient Indigenous Culture
We then follow Argentina’s legendary Ruta 40, cycling south to the Sacred City of the Quilmes. Discover the fascinating history of ancient indigenous cultures and marvel at the Arrows Ravine, where towering 20-metre rock walls frame the winding road.
Picturesque Cachi and Los Cardones National Park
The tour continues to Cachi, a town known for its adobe clay houses, cobbled streets, and the world’s highest-altitude bodega at nearly 2,500m. From here, we loop through Los Cardones National Park, tackling the Piedra de Molino pass and then descending the thrilling zig-zagging Cuesta del Obispo (Bishop Hill), with its stunning rock formations and valley views. Keep an eye out for wild condors as you soak up the panoramic vistas of the Enchanted Valley below.
From World Heritage Landscapes to Salt Flats

Descending from the high-altitude Lipan Steep, we navigate dramatic switchbacks from 4,200m to 2,200m over 30km, reaching Purmamarca, a charming village at the foot of the Andes. Our journey continues to the Yala National Reserve, home to tranquil lagoons and diverse wildlife. The tour concludes with a relaxing visit to the Termas de Reyes hot springs, known as the ‘Springs of Kings’, where indigenous leaders once bathed in the rejuvenating mineral waters.
