Medellin to Bogota

Bogota

The popular and vibrant capital city Bogotá sits at the heart of Colombia on a vast plain at an altitude of 2,600 m and has a gentle climate. Diverse communities dwelling in the city come from all corners of the country.

There's so much to do here. Amongst Bogotá’s plazas, streets and modern avenues you can chose from numerous art galleries and museums, the botanical garden José Celestino Mutis, La Quinta de Bolivar cultural house , the national observatory, the planetarium, and La Candelaria (the historical district of the city). The city has the world's largest bicycling network -the Ciclovía, which covers approximately 300 km.

There are many green parks and a short distance away is the salt cathedral. For those wishing to extend their stay we can assist with arranging extra nights for you.

Medellín

Located in Colombia's Aburrá valley Medellín is surrounded by rugged peaks with stunning vistas on all sides and is known as 'City Of Eternal Spring' for its all year round temperate climate. The city dwellers the Paisas, are renowned for their warmth towards visitors.

Medellín has come a long way from its notorious past. Hosting 6 universities and a large youthful population there is a vibrant night life. Innovative in architecture and transport (Medellín is home to Colombia's only metro system) modernity runs side by side with traditional textile and flower industries. The city centre's streets area bustling with busy markets.

Cultural landmarks include the Botero Plaza and Museum, (named after Fernando Botero, one of Columbia's most famous living artists) and the Botanical Garden. You can take a cable car ride or (for the more adventurous) even paraglide over the city.

The Paisa region

The Paisa region (comprising three departments Caldas, Quindio and Risaralda). Steep green hills and deep set mountain rivers characterise the area providing ideal growing conditions.

This is rural territory with small towns, colonial style architecture and ranches. Paisa is famous for growing and producing Colombian Arabica coffee, the region's most important export and regarded by many as the finest in the world. Most of Colombia's coffee is produced by small family plantations and the beans are harvested by hand.

Typical to the Paisa region is the hearty dish 'Bandeja Paisa', containing shredded meat, chicharron, avocado, sausage, egg, beans, rice, arepita amongst other ingredients. At the heart of Caldas we visit Manizales, with steep streets, the Boliva plaza and cathedral (the third tallest in Latin America, at 113 m), an aerial tramway and eco park.
