Cycling Lhasa to Kathmandu, taking in a visit to Everest Base camp, was a once in a lifetime experience. I wouldn't call it a holiday but more of a personal challenge; physically and mentally. The cycling in Tibet with several high altitude passes to negotiate gave a real sense of achievement in quite a barren landscape.

The few days cycling in Nepal had outstanding scenery which helped distract from the appalling road conditions. The reception received from villagers en route was heart warming. I would recommend this trip to any cyclist keen on a 12/10 challenge!

The trip was well organised. On a daily basis Ox kept the group informed of the itinerary for the day regarding stops for drinks and lunch. If anything was required around camp Ox and his team made sure that the request was met. The food provided was good and plentiful.

The last 2 days were hard going because of the weather conditions on arrival at the guest house in Kalikastahn when the team were soaking wet and cold Ox did an excellent job in organising the guest house staff in providing towels, hot drinks and getting a fire going and his support team did an excellent job in getting the support vehicle thro difficult conditions to arrive just after the group with our bags.

The trip was exhilarating, hard, joyful, fun, exhausting, intriguing, interesting and challenging, a good old fashioned adventure. There was not a day that went by that I was not amazed or surprised by something. Ox our guide has done this trip many times and knows the toll the altitude takes on riders, he checked us out everyday to make sure we were OK, if you were not 100% on any given day, he would recommended spending a day or half day to recuperate in the support van.

Its a long ride and wearing yourself out too early means spending the whole trip in the van! His Nepal team were superb, they made sure we had an abundance of food and drinks to keep the wheels turning. Special mention, Jenzen from the Tibetan team, he was so friendly and informative about his culture and country, thoroughly enjoyed his company and knowledge.

Another great redspokes trip in a remote, hard-to travel-to Asian location. Deserving of its 10/10 rating due to altitude, repeated camping and Nepali roads, although it should be noted that the majority of this route is now good-quality surfaced road.

One of the greatest experiences of my life! The whole thing was brilliant, A fantastic way to see life on the ground ,to really feel part of it and not just another tourist passing through. The challenge of the tour is undoubtedly the goal of getting to the destination, generally over extreme passes and at some serious altitudes .

Is it a tough challenge, yes! but it's completely doable just seems to happen as theres so much to see and take in along the way. Loved it!

This was not an easy trip but it was a great trip. Before signing up, I had no idea what it would be like to go over multiple 5,000m passes. Now I know. I now know what it's like (answer = hard: effects of elevation, effects of long climbs (at elevation), wind, snow, sun, etc.), and I also know that I can do it. I did it!

The country is beautiful. Everything is so big. Sometimes vistas were similar to other places I've been, but always on a bigger scale. Whenever things got tough in terms of the biking, I would find myself at the back of the group, which meant that I would be with Ox (who was riding sweep). He saw everything that happened in the group, how people were riding, who was having problems. This was not my first trip with Ox -- I hope that it is not my last!!

Although it's now four months since we returned from the Himalayas, it's never too late to say 'thank you'. As you know, I organise and lead a different group of work colleagues on an expedition to raise money for charity each year and we have been to some extreme places and done some great things - so think I'm pretty well qualified to comment on the skills of the different organisations we've worked with over the years.

redspokes turned out to be the best we've worked with yet and the next time we go cycling it will be you we come to first. In particular I would like to single out Giles and Ox who made a great team and dealt with the uncertainties of life in Nepal and Tibet with all the flexibility and great humour you could hope for - not everything went to plan and not everything was perfect, it never is on trips to places like that, but every challenge was met and overcome without unnecessary fuss and minimum disruption. We had a brilliant time with redspokes and will recommend you to every cyclist we meet.

As an experienced cycletourist used to self-planned and supported trips, and who had never been on an organised trip before, this was a new experience for me. I was very impressed by the organisation and staff- everything went very smoothly, the support for the riders was good, and the camps were great, with good food and plenty of it. The weather was fantastic for our May trip, which allowed us great views of the mountains, and especially Everest. We also had plenty of time for acclimatisation- very important not to rush this. I'd definitely recommend redspokes to anyone wanting to do this sort of trip without the hassles of researching, planning and carrying everything yourself- not even an option for Tibet these days anyway.

As one of 3 riders on traditional touring bikes I can confirm that this was perfectly fine, with good strong handbuilt wheels and 35c or fatter tyres. Slightly slower than the mountainbikes on the rough sections, especially descending (and no doubt harder on the arms without suspension!), but faster on the majority of the roads which were excellent tarmac. "This was a really fantastic trip, not to be missed!"

Cycling to Everest Basecamp is an amazing adventure and climbing up to almost 17000ft on a bicycle is an exhilarating experience. The views are all the more rewarding given the hard work it has taken to get them! The culture in Tibet is very colourful and there are many monasteries to look round.

One of the highlights for me was going to the city town in Lhasa and seeing the many Pilgrims walk round the Monastery praying. However the best part of the holiday was obviously reaching Rongbuk and seeing Everest. The guides looked after us well and cooked a wide variety of very tasty food.

A trip which certainly deserved its 10 out of 10 rating, but worth all the effort and training. Some days were challenging but the rewards were awsome ...magnificent, breath taking scenery goes without saying, and it was different, so very different each and every day. Watching the Tibetans make mud bricks, collect the harvest, thresh the grain, plough the fields with their wonderful yaks, move everything from horses to food to children in their magnificent tiny tractors was a privilege.

Their smiles lit up their faces and their waves of encouragement as we passed helped the legs keep going. The magnificence of the Himalayas will stay in my mind forever ...but the faces of the people and their deep affinity with their surrounding will lift my spirit and make me burst into a very very big smile

Wow - truly awesome trip that i would recommend to anyone!!! Ox was incredible - flexible, organized, responsive - met our every need and tailored the trip to be exactly what we wanted. i hope it was clear from the blog that we were thrilled with the gruelling nature, stunning scenery and what we believe was quite the accomplishment.

We couldn't have achieved it without the amazing team. Dorje was exceptionally knowledgeable about Tibet and Tibetan history. He provided incredible information, modified our tours so we could be present for prayers. Thanks!

I didn't really know what I was letting myself in for before I started, although Dermot (from redspokes) did a really good job in making sure that my head was ready to deal with the trip, even if my legs weren't. Each turn of the cranks got us one step nearer to completing the journey. I am really proud of myself for completing the trip, despite the fact that I had one bad day, when Dave was incredibly supportive in getting me to the finishing line.

You can't control the weather '“ though this was mercifully kind to us '“ but you can control the quality of leadership and back-up support provided and this far exceeded my expectations. It was absolutely superb and I would have no hesitation in recommending others to undertake this and similar trips with you.

I can't thank you enough - the trip was everything I had hoped it would be and more. Suitably challenging but the great support from Lee, the Nepalese and Tibetan staff and other (rather more experienced) group members made it achievable and a truly remarkable experience.

I was concerned that it was considerably cheaper than other trips, some corners may have been cut, but that certainly didn't seem to be the case.
Looking forward to next years trip already although I haven't quite decided which one it will be. I will certainly be recommending redspokes to my cycling friends.

Ox is a strong and caring team leader who leads an extremely supportive group of helpers that made the trip easier and more enjoyable. The food was enjoyable and plentiful. Patrick was always available to fix mechanical issues with the bikes while also dealing with camp setup and tear down. Our local Tibet guide was incredibly knowledgeable and humorous.

This is an extremely physical and mentally challenging tour, you will learn and test your limits within a group of very supportive cyclists and crew. Ox was a marvel at keeping track of our mental and physical well being and usually knew when someone was having an bad day before we did. This was my second visit to Nepal and the warmth and friendliness of the locals combined with the stunning scenery make it a must visit destination for world travels.

This is a tough trip with long cycling days and extreme attitudes and depending on the time of the year it can also be cold. But the compensation is wonderful vistas and the experience of very different cultures. From Mountains, to Everest base camp, to bustle of Lhasa and in particular Kathmandu, to the decent from 3,700m to just over 1,000m on the worlds longest cycle decent along a river valley which from a beauty perspective truly takes your breath away.

If you like extremes this is a trip not to be missed thanks to redspokes.

Tackling the Roof of the World and Everest on my unicycle was the hardest thing I've ever attempted on one wheel. When you look at the obstacles facing you, whether it's the high mountain passes, the rocky dirt tracks, sub-zero ferocious winds, the thin air at high altitudes, or just the massive distances needed to cover -there's just nothing going for you. This was even more apparent riding the unicycle. As I write, I still can't believe how much I had to push my body to its limits to achieve my goal of completing the ride from Lhasa to Kathmandu. It was hard, very hard. But what a fantastic adventure - I wouldn't have missed it for the world!

I would like to thank Dermot (redspokes) for believing in me and agreeing to let me join the tour in the first place. From the first phone call with Dermot he was so supportive and encouraging, and has been throughout. Thank you for that. Unicycling with a group of mountain bikers did mean that I had different requirements and needs to the rest of the group. These were all met without compromising the others and their needs. In fact the whole group were always there with their words of encouragement and support. Thank you everyone for that.

Throughout, Suresh, redspokes' Nepali mountain bike guide and tour leader, was the perfect leader and guide. Having ridden this route 21 times he had so much experience which helped this tour run smoothly and without problems. The Nepali camp crew were excellent. Great food, which was always varied and healthy, whether it was first thing in the day, on the ride itself, or for the three course evening meal. The tunnel tents were spacious and we even had a Western style loo (not en-suite though). In camp we were always well looked after - nothing was too much trouble for them.

The Tibetan guide was always informative when visiting monasteries and other places of interest. Tensing was always there to help you, or to answer your endless questions. Thank you Tensing for your endless support with my extra long days on the unicycle.Overall, I rate redspokes as a very professional adventure tour company. Would I go on another one of their tours? Only if I can take my unicycle!

My third redspokes trip, and well done the support team, for introducing Nepal and Tibet in a way which was endearing to the Local people and scenery to be in awe of. Off road and road cycling is very exciting a challenge all round. The cycling is Tough but worth every Pedal.

Mile after mile of scenery and happy banter with my fellow cyclists and Everest was the prize. Thank you so much to you all for making my experience in Tibet and Nepal a very memorable time.

This was one of the most spectacular trips I have ever been on! The scenery was varied, awe inspiring, amazing people, very unique culture and environment. The trip was very well organised with a daily routine of: wake up to bowl of hot water, eat yummy cooked breakfast, ride all day with lunch prepared for us : ), eat some more, sleep and do it all again!

Just thinking about it brings a huge smile to my face! It was truly a trip of a lifetime! I can very strongly recommend it.

Just a short note to redspokes to say a large thank you to everyone for providing the framework and support for a most incredible journey travelling from Lhasa to Kathmandu.

Having booked with larger companies in the past [and been some what disappointed] I can say that redspokes have got the blend of adventure and personal endeavour balanced perfectly with the ease of organisation and back-up that your team provided, down to a fine art. A most fantastic trip that I would recommend to anyone who wants to experience something quite different. I hope to join you soon on another journey.

We highly recommend this trip. It is physically and psychologically challenging, but with good preparation the satisfaction with completing the ride is immense. All of this in a spectacular mountain setting. We think the 24 day format is excellent in allowing time for acclimatization and savouring the experience.

Excellent work from the whole support team meant all our needs and wants were met, leaving us free to concentrate on cycling and enjoyment. Thanks to redspokes for an unforgettable cycling experience!!

My first redspokes trip and hopefully there will be many more. Such a fantastic experience and superbly organised but still in a relaxed 'nothing is '˜too much trouble' manner . Both before and after booking all my queries and requests were taken care of by Dermot, Bryony or Ann who were swift in getting back to me. Cycling the 'roof of the world' is amazing and the feelings you get cannot be put into words. Each day the ride never ceases to amaze you with different surroundings and each day seemed to end at an even better place to stay with enough time to enjoy it and then the support team would produce amazing food for all. The group was a nice size with a good blend of people and the camaraderie which occurs on a trip like this was fantastic to experience. All in all we were looked after superbly and the itinerary is well put together so you get the chance to acclimatise and there is plenty of time each day for the rides. I stayed in Nepal before and after the trip and redspokes were very helpful with ideas and organisation for this.

It was a great experience and a marvelous trip through the best scenery ever! The support team was great; all nice guys! Teamleader Ox was very attentive and careful. Our Tibettan guide Migma was a great addition to the team because of his knowledge of culture and history and his drive to share it with us. The cook did his utmost to feed and please us. Hear, hear ! In a way we were lucky that the tour couldn't go as far as Kathmandu, because the Nepal/Chinese border was closed. Because of that, our tour consisted of 25 % unpaved road through a great and desolated countryside. A second advantage was that there were less heavy trucks on the road. We think it is important that your potential clients are aware of the fact that a regular tour is 98 % tarmac with sometimes heavy traffic.

Just writing to say thanks to you and Lee for a great trip through Tibet last October. Tibet has always been one of my dream destinations (Hillary, Everest, high altitude desert, Buddhism, Shangri-La, etc) and the way the trip was organized met all my expectations.

I really enjoyed the chance to interact with the locals through Nawang and Mr. Loka yet still have the challenge of getting through a real adventure and experiencing all that goes with that. I'm already looking forward to doing this again with you guys somewhere else.

It is rare and special privilege to cycle through such a unique and truly breathtaking part of the world. It also presents a great, and ultimately rewarding physical challenge, at least to most as there are those blessed with superhuman physiology!

The experience is enhanced and the pains are eased by the great support crew and the genuine human touch which has been bought to the super organisation of all aspects of the trip and to the relationships with all the people who are involved in it.  And don't forget, Everest awaits you.

Lhasa to Kathmandu is one of the classic overland routes and any cyclist who is looking for a good challenge with spectacular scenery should sign up.

This trip is definitely physically challenging, but redspokes' well-planned itinerary with sufficient days in Lhasa to acclimatize and reasonable distances each cycling day, plus a rest day in Shigatse and great support staff enabled everyone to accomplish the trip. Trip leader and the local crew led by Loka were superb; they even prepared delicious gluten free meals while camping at 5,000 metres.

I have traveled around the world and there has been nothing in my life that has gripped me with such passion as this challenging trip did!The unbelievable sense of accomplishment every time I crested another 5000+ m pass, marked by the prayer flags that cover this amazing country. Dermot led us on a trip that can only be called unbelievable. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't relive this trip: the sight of Everest for the first time, the Buddhist temples, the friendly people, even the total exhaustion of riding head on all day into a strong Tibetan wind. After completing this trip, the only way I will ever top it will be to do it again, and someday I will.

It was possibly the best experience of my life, and is certainly one that I will never forget. I can't speak highly enough of the well oiled redspokes machine (plus partners), and have been singing your praises to all and sundry. (I particularly liked the hands on personal service, especially when I first enquired-although I didn't really realize till after, that I was being assessed for suitability as much as I was finding out about the trip!! I was very sad to see everyone leaving Kathmandu at the end of the trip, it was kind of hard to try to describe the experience to anyone who hadn't been there, even cycling pals. Anyway, thanks again.

My recent trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu was the most fascinating holiday and hardest work out I have ever done. Because of my age and the fact of not having done anything on this scale before, I was apprehensive for many months beforehand, and was so pleased when we started to find that the back up and support was as comprehensive as advertised. No one felt obliged or pressured to ride in the vehicles unless absolutely necessary to reach the planned stop before nightfall which lead to a genuine sense of cooperation and camaraderie between all members of the group from youngest to oldest, and no stigma attached to having to accept a ride for a while.

I was pleasantly surprised by the standard of hotels used, not expecting the clean 3 star establishments with en-suite facilities and "proper" toilets that were provided. A local guide and transport were used on the five acclimatisation and rest days in Lhasa, Xigatse and Kathmandu for the sightseeing trips which I had not expected and which added greatly to the overall holiday experience. However, I must say that most of my comments must go to the fantastic service and facilities provided by Loka and his team. I was expecting very primitive conditions with tiny two man tents and not much else, but we were made very comfortable and well fed under a wide range of climatic extremes and from dawn to dusk, not only at the camp sites, but also at the regular 20km and lunch stops during the cycling days.

I will always remember Loka looking out and walking down the road to see that everyone was managing to reach the stops OK with genuine concern and encouragement. There was always more than enough food providing ample carbohydrate three times a day with hot water for washing as a wake up call every morning and a proper sit-down toilet.
Bye for now.

The Tibet tour was an experience that will make me smile again and again. We were very lucky on our tour with the weather conditions, but luck wasn't the only thing: the teamwork and flexibility between the tour leader (David) and the Nepalese and Tibetan crew to ensure we all had a fantastic time was unsurpassed.

The food was better than I cook for myself at home and the the camping had a hint of colonial luxury. I cannot recommend redspokes more highly.

To cycle across the "roof of the world" and experience the mysterious and magical world of Tibet is a dream that I can relive with others for the rest of my life. The highlights for me were to visit base camp where we stood in the face of Everest and then to cycle the world's longest downhill into Nepal.

Thanks again to Dermot MacWard of redspokes and my fellow cyclist who were a joy to be with.

The trip was amazing. The scenery fantastic. Like being in another world. The distances are fine and once you are over the altitude sickness it was plain sailing. Almost all the roads are well tarmaced and I would suggest a heavy touring bike is a better choice than a mountain bike. I travelled on 35c tyres with no problems at all and much faster and smoother than the mountain bikes.

The group that I joined was a bit younger than me; in fact at 62 I was older than everyone's father. There were nine of us. I have been on many biking trips but this was luxurious; tents were pitched when you got to camp and taken down for you in the morning. No one expected two inch foam mats that you put your sleeping bags on. The food was excellent, not only healthy but good tasting, there was even a sort of high tea when you got in to camp. The Leaders and support staff were friendly and knowledgeable. There were three support vehicles and no was left out of sight or ran short of water. The scenery was outstanding and the last three days were mostly downhill. A fantastic trip that I have recommended to all my cycling friends.

I had been looking forward to doing this trip for several years and I had very high expectations. All of them were met. It was magnificent. Due to the apparently unusually strong headwinds and, in parts, extremely rough roads it was a bit tougher than I had anticipated. But nothing could detract from the positive aspects - the camaraderie within the group, the satisfaction felt at the end of each day, the exhilaration of actually "doing it" - cycling across the greatest mountain range on Earth. And towards the end - the thrill of the spectacular descent into Nepal, with the amazing change in environment as we did so. I would not recommend this trip to just anyone; but for those who appreciate a challenge, this is the one for you! Thanks to Giles, Loca and all the crew for making everything run so smoothly.

I loved the whole experience. I met loads of fantastic people and felt that the group gelled together really well; particularly considering the youngest was 19 and oldest was 63. People were really laid back and looked after each other in a quiet sort of way. I was higher maintenance (!) than I would have liked to have been due to illness. It was really reassuring to know that David and the support crew were there and were really supportive and extremely helpful. I would love to do the whole trip again!! Am already looking into my next trip. Thanks for a fantastic experience.

This trip to Tibet and the chance to cycle The Roof Of The World has to be the ultimate experience for any rider. Steeped in history and mystery, Tibet remains a truly wonderful wilderness, and if the altitude doesn't take your breath away the views certainly will! If you are looking for a challenge and something that little bit different, this is the perfect trip. Everyone should do it.

Doing this trip has been one of my greatest experiences of my life. The scenery and people of both countries will knock your socks off and the sense of achievement is indescribable. It was tough going at times but the support crew and Dermot made sure that the group were well looked after.

This truly for me was the trip of a lifetime and every day lived up to my expectations and beyond. Its impossible to explain the amazing scenery and the emotion at being at the rooftop of the world! Even on the toughest days there was always something that made you smile. This is an incredible adventure. We had a wonderful group, relaxed and fun to be with. The support and encouragement was always in abundance. David our "leader" ;-) and all the support team Tibetan and Nepalese did an incredible job looking after us, the meals they turned out to say the least were spectacular!!! I couldn't fault a thing! This was my third redspokes tour and you continually get it right... Well done and I look forward to choosing my next adventure with you.

This was a fascinating journey from start to finish with a great group of fellow cyclists, guides and support crew. I feel a huge sense of achievement having completed the journey. Both Tibet and Nepal are stunningly beautiful countries. Cycling in the Everest region is an experience that will stay with me for many years. I would definitely recommend redspokes to anyone I know who is thinking of doing a long distance cycling trip. Everything ran extremely smoothly and I think this has a lot to do with the experience of the guides and the well thought out organisation that went into the planning of the trip.

What an amazing experience. Our crew was superb and kept us fed like kings the entire trip. It was an adventure that is unforgettable, cycling through Tibet and Nepal allows for a very hands-on tangible experience. The climbs were testing given the effect of altitude; however, the reward was the best views and descents ever. Dropping down from the high Tibetan plateaus and into the valleys of Nepal was spectacular. Thank you to the crew and to my fellow riders for making this just so magic :-)

Completing this trip ranks as one of the most incredible challenges I have ever done and the sense of achievement is amazing. The tour leader and all of the local staff contributed greatly to making this happen, this along with every member of the tour.

A very well organised trip, I would recommend redspokes above other companies who run this route. The reason being the quality of leadership, back-up, the food and an itinerary which allows for better acclimatization. Oh, and we had a superb group!

I would have no hesitation in recommending Redspokes cycling adventure tours having had an excellent experience riding from Lhasa (Tibet) to Kathmandu (Nepal) along the Friendship Highway, with a detour to Everest Base camp. The flexibility and determination to ensure that we achieved our goals were unparalleled and several circumstances overcome that lesser organisations may have given in to. The itinerary and choice of campsites/hotels gave us every opportunity to acclimatise as well as experience different environments and maximise our chances of completing this 10/10 extreme tour. An adventure experience that I doubt I shall surpass. I would particularly like to commend Gambu Sherpa, our cycle guide who not only rode with us but also managed the whole trip superbly - always a sparkle in his eye, great cycle mechanic and so patient. Brilliant.

The redspokes Tibet tour was AMAZING. It was a very well organised trip which allowed plenty of time before the start for acclimatization to the altitude. The scenery was just something else. There was not a cloud in the sky at Everest. It was so hard on many levels, but worth every second it. I can't put into words just how awesome the experience was, but it is one which will stay with me forever.

I've never been on an organised tour before, as I normally prefer to be able to go at my own pace and change routes if I feel like it. For Tibet this isn't a practical option. The redspokes tour offered the chance to see Tibet and clock up some miles in an otherwise inaccessible, and culturally fascinating, area. Liked the attitude of the organisation, in putting cycling first, and would definitely recommend you to anyone wanting to do this route. Excellent support staff and still barely able to credit that the food was so good/plentiful that I came back the same weight I started out.
